Death Master File Restrictions Begin

Death record information no longer flows freely on the Internet thanks to new government restrictions brought on over fraud and identity theft concerns. The Social Security Administration Death Index (SSDI) also known as the Death Master File (DMF) has been restricted effective March 26, 2014.

Certified users like private investigators conducting fraud investigations will still be able to access the data -- assuming the data vendor they uses is a licensee of the newly restricted data. There will be a $1000 penalty per violation and users of the limited access data will be subject to audits.

Death data from before March 26, 2014 is not impacted. Post-March 26, 2014 death records will otherwise be blacked-out for three years, then released in an "open access DMF".
